Dog Treat Gets 12 Wags

Dogs love treats. They pretty much love everything that has to do with food. There are a few finicky poochers, but generally if it's food, your dog will eat it. Along these lines, I've been experimenting a bit with dog treats. I give my furry babies one in the morning when I'm leaving for work and one at night for dessert. There are so many treats available it's mind boggling to choose so I decided to make some of my own. When I'm making these treats, my dogs sit at either end of the kitchen drooling in anticipation of the final product. Talk about sitting pretty when I pull these cookies out!

These are easy to make and will get at least 12 wags from your poochers.

2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup unbleached flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 apple chopped really fine (no granny smith--too sour)
1 egg beaten
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon of brown sugar (preferably dark but light is o.k.)
3/8 to 1/2 cup water
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon molassis

Oven temperature: 325 degrees F.
Spray your cookie sheets with non-stick spray.
Mix together all dry ingredients.
In a separate bowl mix together all your wet ingredients (including the apple bits)
Put all ingredients together and mix very well.

Flour your cutting board. Roll out the dough (you'll need to put a little flour so your rolling pin doesn't stick) to 1/4" thickness (a little thicker is o.k. but no thinner). Cut with cookie cutters (I use a heart shape-it's perfect size and comes from my heart). Place cut cookies on the sprayed cookie sheet.

Bake in preheated oven 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool. Store in an airtight container and keep in the refridgerator (reclosable plastic storage bags work well).

Bon appetit.
